The Online Exchange
How to send a message to the Online Exchange

Sending a message to over 700 fellow PPFA® members is as easy as sending an e-mail message. When you send a message to the Online Exchange Address, the list software takes the message and sends a copy to everyone that is set to MAIL and makes an entry in the digest file for creation of the next Digest.

To send a message simply address it to hitchhikers@ppfa.com.

There are some specific rules about how a message is formatted and what you should send to the list.

Messages must be in plain text format. This helps to prevent the spread of a virus directly through the list and ensures that everyone is able to read your message. I have some instructions for popular e-mail programs under "Message Format.

Do not send attachments to the list. The software will reject your message if you do. I once had someone try to send a 2.5 mb attachment to the list. You can imagine the load that that would have placed on the mail servers.

When replying to a message, please, please, please, do not include the entire text from the message that you are replying to. Only include a small snippet of the old message if you need to remind people of the old message. This not only makes the messages smaller, but also easier to read.

Please be sure that the message that you are about to send is something that most people will want to see. If someone is looking for something, the proper thing to do is reply to them individualy rather than to the list. When you use the reply function of your e-mail program, the message will be addressed to the list. You will need to copy and paste the person's address from the message that you are replying to.

And most of all, be polite. Differences of opinion are a fact of life, but don't be a jerk. Make every message sound as if you were sending it to your mother.
